Somerset Larder: Six Somerset food producers join forces to compete for large catering contracts

Somerset Larder was established in 2014 to bring together the county’s finest food and drink producers – to act as one – in order to compete for large catering contracts.
Somerset Larder estimate serving 8,000 meals a day at the planned Hinkley Point C site and using 1.5m eggs, half a million kilos of meat, fish, vegetables and fruit, 20 tonnes of cheese and 1.2m tea bags each year at peak construction.

They have plans to provide the construction site with a full service, one stop catering solution including a central production kitchen and exclusive Somerset sourced products. Somerset Larder operate a ‘from field to fork’ ethos working with over 20 local food and drink producers ensuring only the finest, locally sourced, products make it onto canteen tables.

It’s not just food produce that the Larder will need in plentiful supply, as the Hinkley Point C opportunity is set to create over 200 direct new jobs plus create other openings throughout the supply chain. Working with Bridgwater College, Somerset Larder has launched ‘FAB Futures’ which aims to attract, train and develop skills in hospitality for recruits of all ages and backgrounds. This will provide a pipeline of workers ready as required for the project – including many new apprenticeships.

The Somerset Larder directors hope to make Somerset and neighbouring counties a focus for ‘Food Accommodation Beverage’ talent and to raise the standards and reward for careers in hospitality. Somerset Larder already operates at Hinkley Point C today having won the £1.8m interim catering contract in 2014.

Somerset Larder comprises of:

  • Cricketer Farms, Nether Stowey
  • Cossey Produce Ltd, Bridgwater
  • DJ Miles & Co, Porlock
  • Pyne’s of Somerset, Bridgwater
  • Mortimers Bakery, Yeovil
